Types of Shrub TREE plants

Brachylaena discolor

Brachylaena discolor forms a dense, wide, spreading, single or multi-stemmed tree that branches low down to form an irregular v-shaped canopy. The trunk reaches 45 cm in diameter and is covered with light brown fibrous bark. The trunk is divided into several large branches that tend to grow upwards and then horizontally to form bows.

Buddleja saligna

The false olive’s young stems are four angled and covered with white velvety hairs. The older stems and trunks are creamy or grey to dark brown and fluted with the bark peeling in longitudinal strips. The leaves are long and narrow. The leaf upper surface is hairless and dark green, the underside is whitish with prominently raised venation.

Buddleja salvifolia

The older stems and trunks are creamy or grey to dark brown and fluted with the bark peeling in longitudinal strips. The leaves are long and narrow. The leaf upper surface is hairless and dark green, the underside is whitish with prominently raised venation.

Dodonea viscosa angustifolia/purpurea

Dodonaea viscosa var. angustifolia is an evergreen shrub or small tree up to 5 m high. Its bark is light grey and finely fissured. The droopy leaves are shiny light green above and paler green below. The purpurea var. has purple leaves.

Dovyalis caffra

The leaves of Kei apple are glossy and oval with a leathery feel. The bark is rough, corky, white to pale grey and is longitudinally fissured with strong straight spines on the branches.

Hallaria lucida

This is an evergreen tree or large shrub, often multi-stemmed, with a spreading crown and attractive glossy bright green foliage on arching and drooping branches. In the more exposed situations it is generally a stocky or shrubby tree, but in well-watered protected conditions it can become quite a large tree.

Polygala myrtifolia

A common, widespread pioneer shrub with pretty mauve flowers on and off throughout the year with a peak in spring. The oval-shaped leaves are light green, dark green or slightly grey.

Portulacaria afra

The Porkbush is an attractive, evergreen succulent shrub or small tree. It has small round succulent leaves and red stems. Small star-shaped pink flowers are borne en masse from late winter to spring

Searsia/Rhus glauca

An evergreen, densely branched shrub, with branches that are characteristically angular. Compound leaves are borne on slender stalks and are scattered or clustered on young reddish branchlets; tips of leaflets are often slightly indented.

Tarchonanthus camphoratus

A large, evergreen shrub or small tree with silvery leaves that are woolly below. All parts of this plant smell of camphor when crushed.

Viburnum sinensis

A hardy shrub-like tree with dense foliage. Its leaves are bright green and glossy and look good all year round.

Viburnum tinus compactum

A smaller, compact version of other viburnum species. The leaves are slightly smaller and darker green. Tight clusters of lightly fragrant pinkish-white flowers bloom in spring.
