Types of Perennial plants

Aristea ecklonii

Aristea ecklonii is an indigenous, evergreen perennial with attractive, blue, star-like flowers that make quite a show in early summer and late spring. It grows fast and attracts butterflies.

Artemisia afra

The stems are ribbed with strong swollen lines that run all the way up. The soft leaves are finely divided, almost fern-like. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green whereas the undersides and the stems are covered with small white hairs, which give the shrub the characteristic overall grey colour.

Bulbine abyssinica

Bulbine abyssinica is a succulent, perennial herb which grows in small clusters. The soft, dark green leaves are erect or arching, linear and grass-like. Several dense, many-flowered, spike-like inflorescences are formed from a cluster of plants during spring.

Chlorophytum saundersiae

hlorophytum saundersiae is a gregarious and spreading perennial that grows up to 40cm high and has a bushy grass-like appearance, with leaves forming a basal rosette. It has long thin roots without tubers . Leaves are light green, linear  and gradually tapering.

Cyperus prolifer

Cyperus prolifer is a hardy, evergreen, small sedge. Each green stem is topped by a cluster of grass-like flower spikelets.

Cyperus textilis

The stems are long and rounded, forming large clumps. Small branched greenish flowering spikes appear above the leaf-like bracts in late summer. The true leaves are at the base of the plant, reduced to sheaths which clasp the stem.

Dietes bicolor

An attractive perennial or small shrub which bears masses of lemon-yellow flowers with dark brown spots in the centre. The flowers are borne on tall stalks above clumps of light-green strap-shaped leaves.

Dietes grandiflora

The wild iris is a fast-growing, evergreen perennial that forms a clump of long strappy leaves. Once established, the plant flowers for many months. It bears masses of large, delicate white-orange-and-mauve flowers displayed on tall stalks.

Dimorphotheca jucundem

D. jucunda is a perennial herb growing from an underground stem. The above-ground stems are erect or sprawling. The leaves are alternately arranged, semi-succulent, linear-lanceolate, lanceolate, oblanceolate, narrowly elliptic or narrowly oblong.

Felicia amelloides

Kniphofia Praecox

Kniphofia praecox is a very hardy, herbaceous perennial which is thought to be a garden hybrid. The long, strap-like leaves are folded in a clump and are quite hard.

Kniphofia uvaria

It is an erect perennial often found in groups or large colonies in the grassland. The leaves are generally arranged in a dense rosette and are blueish-grey-green in colour.

Lavender Margaret Roberts

 An upright, fast growing lavender. The blooms appear throughout the year, in clusters atop fine stems. The long-stemmed flowers are excellent for cutting.

Pelargonium betulinum

It is a small, upright or sprawling bushy herbaceous shrublet with woody branches. The leaves are small, broad, and ovate in shape, and carried on petioles.

Pelargonium capitatum

A shrubby or bushy, low-growing plant with soft-wooded, sprawling or erect stems. The stems and leaves are sweetly scented when bruised, and are covered with long, soft hairs of variable density.

Pelargonium cucullatum

A hardy, evergreen, fast growing shrub and is the parent of many of the modern hybrid Pelargoniums. It has attractive round to kidney shape quilted leaves that are sweetly scented when crushed.

Pelargonium ionidiflorum

A small, woody shrublet. The stems are rough with leaf scars and are covered with a layer of greyish brown cork. The young stems are yellowish green and are always covered with glandular hairs.

Pelargonium tomentosum

An aromatic, low-growing, sprawling subshrub, with branches spreading in all directions. The stems are herbaceous and brittle, becoming somewhat woody with age.

Plectranthus ecklonii

A fairly hardy, erect, shrubby Plectranthus with attractive, large, quilted leaves and spikes of pink, white or mauve flowers.

Salvia guaranitica

An impressive perrenial with dark, slender stems and clumps of ovate green leaves. It form large spikes of deep blue, bell-like flowers.

Salvia leucantha purple

An evergreen perennial, features fuzzy white stems, grey-green leaves, and velvet-like purple flower spikes.

Salvia mystic spires

It has an upright, mounding habit of bright green leaves, topped by sturdy flowering stems of purple-blue flowers that form tall, cone-shaped clumps.

Senecio hamilifolius

 It is an upright perennial with a woody base and glossy green foliage along the branched stems. The cheerful flowers are large daisies, a single row of petals around a yellow centre, formed at the tips of the stems.

Statice/Limonium perezii

An evergreen perennial that hugs the ground and bears papery, purple-blue flowers on long stalks for most of the year, especially during late winter and spring.

Strelitzia reginae

A hardy evergreen perrenial with lush, bright green foliage. It bears beautiful large flowers at the tops of long stems, the bright orange and pruple petals organised to resemble cranes.

Wachendorfia thyrsiflora

A tall evergreen perrenial hoisting its bright yellow flowers high in the air by long stems. The leaves are firm, hairless and broadly sword-shaped, with very distinctive longitudinally pleated leaf blades.
